Board of Trustees & UChicago Structure
You’ve heard what’s UGLY about the University…but who has the power that we want?
UChicago Administration: President, Provost, and Deans.
They handle general university operations and the have some freedom with their own initiatives…but must act in accordance with the Board of Trustees, a group of corporate leaders and wealthy powerful people, many of whom are connected to arms of racial capitalism like the military industrial complex and the fossil fuel industry, that make the large scale decisions that guide the University as an institution. They’ve refused to divest from South African Apartheid, the Dafur genocide in Sudan, and the fossil fuel industry despite ongoing calls from students and community members. The Board does not engage directly with students or take student input and is incredibly opaque about what they do and how they do it.
Fun fact: the University has an operating budget of $2.6 billion and an endowment of $10.3 billion but little to NO financial transparency around what they do with that many.
